A Courmayeur private transfer is a pre-booked, door-to-door chauffeur journey between an airport — most often Turin, Geneva or Milan Malpensa — and a hotel or chalet in Courmayeur, the Aosta Valley resort at the foot of Mont Blanc's southern face. Polidori Exclusive Services has operated private chauffeur transport since 1966, and Courmayeur is one of the most requested destinations in its winter programme, both on its own and combined with Chamonix on the French side of the mountain.
This guide covers the three main gateway airports and their drive times, the Mont Blanc Tunnel crossing to France, winter road rules in the Aosta Valley and the most common onward routes. It is part of the wider Luxury Ski Resort Transfers guide, which covers resorts across Italy, Switzerland, France and Austria.
Definition
What Is a Courmayeur Private Transfer?
A Courmayeur private transfer is an exclusive journey by private vehicle and professional chauffeur, booked for one traveller or group only, that collects passengers at the arrivals hall or private aviation terminal and drives directly to their accommodation in Courmayeur or its surrounding hamlets, such as Entrèves, La Palud and Dolonne. Unlike a shared ski shuttle, departure follows the actual landing time, there are no intermediate drop-offs, and the vehicle is chosen for the exact number of passengers, suitcases and ski or snowboard bags.
Courmayeur sits at about 1,224 metres above sea level, at the head of the Aosta Valley where the A5 motorway ends at the entrance to the Mont Blanc Tunnel. This position makes it one of the most accessible high-mountain resorts in the Alps: the final approach is short and largely on motorway, and the resort can be reached from two countries without crossing a mountain pass.
Gateways
Which Airport Should You Fly Into?
| Airport | Distance | Approx. Drive Time | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turin Caselle (TRN) | ~150 km | ~1h45 | A5 motorway through the Aosta Valley |
| Geneva (GVA) | ~117 km | ~1h30 | Via Chamonix and the Mont Blanc Tunnel |
| Milan Malpensa (MXP) | ~240 km | ~2h40 | A26 / A4 / A5 motorways |
Drive times assume normal winter conditions; snowfall, Saturday changeover traffic and queues at the Mont Blanc Tunnel can add significantly to them. Turin is the closest Italian airport and keeps the whole journey within Italy. Geneva often offers the widest choice of international flights and is slightly closer in time, but the route crosses into France and back through the tunnel. Milan Malpensa is the natural choice for long-haul arrivals and for travellers combining Courmayeur with Milan or Lake Como; general Malpensa airport arrangements are described on the Private Airport Transfer Italy page.
Planning
What to Prepare Before You Book
- Flight number and arrival time, or the private aviation handler for private jet arrivals.
- The exact accommodation address, since hotels in Entrèves and La Palud lie a few kilometres from Courmayeur's centre.
- Number of passengers, suitcases and ski or snowboard bags.
- Child seats, if travelling with younger skiers.
- Any planned day trips to Chamonix, Cervinia or Verbier, and the return airport if different from arrival.
Audience
Who This Service Is For
Skiers and Freeriders
Courmayeur's slopes and the off-piste terrain around Mont Blanc — including the Vallée Blanche glacier run, shared with Chamonix — attract experienced skiers who often travel with more than one pair of skis. A private transfer allows equipment to travel with the group rather than being shipped separately.
Gulf and UAE Families
Courmayeur's compact, pedestrian-friendly village centre and its proximity to Geneva make it a practical choice for family ski holidays. Families travelling with several generations and substantial luggage benefit from the same vehicle sizing and discretion described on the VIP Chauffeur Italy for UAE and Gulf Travellers page.
Groups and Corporate Ski Weeks
Corporate incentive groups and ski clubs arriving on the same flight are moved together in coordinated vehicles, with a minibus or dedicated equipment vehicle where needed, following the approach on the Luxury Group Transport Italy page.
Mountain Sightseers
Not every visitor skis. The Skyway Monte Bianco cable car, opened in 2015, rises from Entrèves at about 1,300 metres via the Pavillon station at 2,173 metres to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 metres, with rotating cabins on both sections. A driver can be scheduled around the cable car's operating hours and weather windows.
Cross-Border
Courmayeur to Chamonix via the Mont Blanc Tunnel
The Mont Blanc Tunnel, 11.6 km long and open since 1965, connects Courmayeur with Chamonix in France. Inside the tunnel speed is held between 50 and 70 km/h with a mandatory distance of 150 metres between vehicles, and the complete Courmayeur–Chamonix journey normally takes around half an hour. This makes it straightforward to ski both sides of Mont Blanc in the same week, or to arrive through Geneva and Chamonix and depart through Turin.
Passengers should carry a passport or valid identity document on every cross-border transfer, even though both Italy and France are in the Schengen area.
Regulations
Winter Roads in the Aosta Valley
In Italy, winter tyres or snow chains on board are required on roads designated by signage during the winter period, which nationally runs from 15 November to 15 April; in the Aosta Valley the requirement has typically started earlier, from 15 October. On the French side, the mountain areas around Chamonix require winter tyres or chains from 1 November to 31 March under the "Loi Montagne" rules.
Transfers to and from Courmayeur are planned with the winter equipment required on both sides of the border, and road and tunnel conditions are checked before departure so that timing can be adjusted in advance.
Connections
Onward Routes from Courmayeur
| Destination | Country | Approx. Drive Time | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chamonix | France | ~30 min | Ski both sides of Mont Blanc in one week |
| Aosta | Italy | ~30 min | Roman town centre, dinner or shopping |
| Breuil-Cervinia | Italy | ~1h30 | Second resort, high-altitude snow |
| Verbier | Switzerland | ~1h45 | Via the Great St Bernard Tunnel |
| Turin | Italy | ~1h45 | City stay before or after the ski week |
Travellers combining Courmayeur with Switzerland can also continue to Zermatt over the Simplon Pass or to St. Moritz via Milan, those adding the French Alps can reach Courchevel via Chamonix, and those starting their trip in Turin can find city arrangements on the Turin private chauffeur page.
Practicalities
Vehicles, Ski Equipment and Timing
An executive sedan suits a couple travelling with suitcases only; an SUV or van is usually needed once ski or snowboard bags are added; and a luxury minibus or a second vehicle is arranged for larger families and groups. The vehicle categories are described on the fleet page.
Saturday is the main changeover day in Courmayeur and Chamonix, which concentrates traffic on the A5 and at the tunnel. Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays are the busiest periods, and transfers for these dates are best booked several weeks in advance. Early departures for return flights are planned with an extra margin in case of overnight snowfall.
