A Chamonix private transfer is a pre-booked, door-to-door chauffeur journey from an airport — most often Geneva, about 88 km away — to a hotel or chalet in the Chamonix valley at the foot of Mont Blanc. Polidori Exclusive Services has operated private chauffeur transport since 1966, and its cross-border winter programme connects Chamonix with Geneva and with Italy through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, often as part of a week split with Courmayeur on the Italian side.

This guide covers the gateway airports and drive times, the tunnel link with Italy, winter driving rules and the most common combinations. It is part of the wider Luxury Ski Resort Transfers guide covering resorts across Italy, Switzerland, France and Austria.

Definition

What Is a Chamonix Private Transfer?

It is an exclusive journey in a private vehicle with a professional chauffeur, reserved for one traveller or group, from an airport, railway station or city hotel directly to the accommodation in Chamonix or the surrounding villages of the valley, such as Les Houches, Les Praz and Argentière. Departure follows the actual landing time, and the vehicle is chosen for the exact number of passengers, suitcases and ski or mountaineering equipment.

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, in the Haute-Savoie department, hosted the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924. The Aiguille du Midi cable car rises to 3,842 metres and gives access to the Vallée Blanche, the famous off-piste glacier descent; the main ski areas are Les Grands Montets, Brévent–Flégère and the Domaine de Balme.

Gateways

Which Airport to Fly Into

AirportDistanceApprox. Drive TimeBest For
Geneva (GVA)~88 km~1h15The closest airport, most international flights
Turin (TRN)~170 km~2h15Combinations with Italy, via the Mont Blanc Tunnel
Milan Malpensa (MXP)~260 km~3h15Long-haul and Gulf arrivals via Italy

Drive times assume normal winter conditions; snowfall, Saturday changeover traffic and queues at the Mont Blanc Tunnel can add to them. Geneva is the natural gateway for most travellers, while Turin and Malpensa suit itineraries that also include Courmayeur, Milan or other parts of Italy.

Cross-Border

Chamonix and Courmayeur via the Mont Blanc Tunnel

The Mont Blanc Tunnel, 11.6 km long and open since 1965, connects Chamonix with Courmayeur in Italy. Inside the tunnel speed is held between 50 and 70 km/h with a mandatory distance of 150 metres between vehicles, and the complete Chamonix–Courmayeur journey normally takes around half an hour. This makes it easy to ski both sides of Mont Blanc in the same week, or to arrive through Geneva and depart through Turin or Milan.

France and Italy are both in the Schengen area, but passengers should carry a passport or valid identity document on every cross-border transfer; routes from Geneva also cross the Swiss–French border.

Planning

What to Prepare Before You Book

  • Flight number and arrival time, or the private aviation handler for private jet arrivals.
  • The exact accommodation address, since the valley spans several villages.
  • Number of passengers, suitcases and ski, snowboard or mountaineering bags.
  • Passports or identity documents for every passenger.
  • Any days planned in Courmayeur, Courchevel or Verbier during the stay.

Audience

Who This Service Is For

Skiers and Mountaineers

Chamonix attracts experienced skiers and alpinists who travel with substantial technical equipment; a private transfer keeps it in one vehicle from the airport to the door and allows early starts for mountain days.

Families and Gulf Travellers

Families travelling with several generations and substantial luggage benefit from the vehicle sizing and discretion described on the VIP Chauffeur Italy for UAE and Gulf Travellers page.

Groups and Corporate Ski Weeks

Groups arriving together are moved in coordinated vehicles, with a dedicated equipment vehicle where needed, following the approach on the Luxury Group Transport Italy page.

Regulations

Winter Driving in the French Alps

Under the French "Loi Montagne" rules, vehicles in designated mountain areas must carry snow chains or be fitted with winter tyres from 1 November to 31 March, and only tyres with the 3PMSF alpine symbol are accepted as an equivalent to chains (official notice). On the Italian side, winter tyres or chains on board are required on designated roads, generally from 15 November to 15 April. Transfers are planned with the winter equipment required in every country on the route.

Practicalities

Vehicles, Ski Equipment and Timing

An executive sedan suits a couple with suitcases only; an SUV or van is usually needed once ski or snowboard bags are added; and a luxury minibus or a second vehicle is arranged for larger families and groups. The vehicle categories are described on the fleet page.

Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays are the busiest periods, and transfers for these dates are best booked several weeks in advance. Early departures for return flights are planned with an extra margin in case of overnight snowfall.
