A private driver Dolomites Cortina d'Ampezzo service offers a discreet and comfortable way to travel through one of Italy's most spectacular mountain regions. From Venice Marco Polo Airport to Cortina, scenic mountain passes, ski resorts and summer hiking destinations, private mobility allows travellers to move between valleys without depending on limited rail connections or complicated transfers.

Polidori Exclusive Services has operated since 1966, providing chauffeur-driven transportation for international travellers, private families, executives and VIP clients. In the Dolomites, each service is planned around seasonal road conditions, luggage requirements and the pace of the itinerary. For nationwide chauffeur coverage, travellers can also explore Private Driver Italy.

Planning

Why Dolomites Chauffeur Travel Requires Local Planning

The Dolomites are not a single resort but a network of valleys, towns and mountain passes across northeastern Italy. Distances that appear short on a map can involve winding roads, altitude changes and seasonal closures.

An itinerary with a private driver can therefore be planned around real road conditions rather than simple point-to-point distance. The chauffeur can coordinate airport arrivals, hotel transfers, scenic drives, ski days and multi-day journeys while allowing realistic time between destinations.

Gateways

Airports and Drive Times to Cortina d'Ampezzo

Cortina d'Ampezzo lies at about 1,224 metres in the province of Belluno, in the Veneto region. It has no airport of its own — the airfield built for the 1956 Games is closed — so visitors arrive through the airports of the Veneto, Lombardy or Tyrol and continue by road. The nearest railway station, Calalzo-Pieve di Cadore-Cortina, is about 35 km south of the town.

AirportApprox. DistanceApprox. Drive TimeBest For
Treviso (TSF)~138 km~1h45–2hEuropean flights
Venice Marco Polo (VCE)~150–190 km, depending on route~2h–2h15Long-haul and Gulf arrivals
Innsbruck (INN)~165 km~2h15Arrivals via Austria, combinations with Tyrol
Verona (VRN)~260 km~3hCombinations with Lake Garda or Verona

Venice Marco Polo is one of the most practical gateways to Cortina and the eastern Dolomites. A pre-arranged private driver allows passengers to continue directly from the airport to a hotel, chalet or resort without organising onward transportation after landing; general arrangements are described on the Venice airport private transfer page. Drive times assume normal conditions, and snowfall, Saturday changeover traffic and holiday peaks can add significantly to them.

Heritage

Cortina d'Ampezzo and the UNESCO Dolomites

Cortina d'Ampezzo is one of Italy's best-known mountain destinations, combining winter sports, alpine scenery and refined hospitality. The town hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and was one of the two host cities of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, when it hosted women's alpine skiing on the Olimpia delle Tofane course, together with bobsleigh, luge, skeleton and curling.

The surrounding landscape is equally important. The Dolomites were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009 for their exceptional natural beauty and geological significance, across nine mountain systems in northeastern Italy.

Scenic Routes

Scenic Routes and Mountain Passes

One of the main advantages of a private driver in the Dolomites is the flexibility to build the journey around the landscape rather than a fixed public-transport timetable. Routes may include Passo Falzarego, Passo Giau and sections of the Great Dolomites Road, depending on season, weather and road availability. In summer, these roads are ideal for scenic touring, photography and access to hiking areas. In winter, snow, ice and temporary closures can affect travel times.

Ski

Skiing in Cortina and the Dolomiti Superski Area

Cortina's own slopes total about 115 km, served by 34 lifts, across three main areas: the Tofana, with steeper terrain starting at around 2,500 metres; Faloria–Cristallo–Mietres, suitable for all abilities and families; and Cinque Torri–Lagazuoi, where the Lagazuoi cable car rises to 2,752 metres and the long Armentarola run descends towards Alta Badia and the Sella Ronda.

Cortina is also part of Dolomiti Superski, which links 12 resorts — including Alta Badia and Val Gardena, Kronplatz and Arabba–Marmolada — with about 1,246 km of slopes and 450 lifts on a single ski pass. A private driver makes it practical to ski a different valley each day, with the vehicle waiting at the end of the run rather than at the starting point.

Seasons

Winter Ski Travel and Summer Touring

The Dolomites have two distinct high seasons. Winter is centred on skiing and mountain resorts, while summer attracts hikers, photographers and travellers interested in scenic touring and alpine hospitality. A booking can be adapted to either season: winter itineraries may prioritise ski equipment, road conditions and resort access, while summer journeys can include panoramic stops, trail access and longer scenic drives.

For winter transfers to other Alpine resorts — including Courmayeur, Cervinia, Madonna di Campiglio, St. Moritz, Zermatt, Courchevel and Kitzbühel — see Luxury Ski Resort Transfers.

Regulations

Winter Driving Rules on the Way to Cortina

In Italy, winter tyres or snow chains on board are required on roads designated by signage during the winter period, which generally runs from 15 November to 15 April, and this applies to the main access roads to Cortina. High passes such as Passo Giau and Passo Falzarego may close temporarily after heavy snowfall. Transfers from Innsbruck also cross Austria, where winter tyres are required from 1 November to 15 April whenever roads are wintry and a motorway vignette is needed. Every winter transfer is planned with the equipment required on the route, and road conditions are checked before departure.

Fleet

Choosing the Right Vehicle

Vehicle choice should reflect the season, passenger numbers, luggage and route. For winter travel, an SUV or suitably equipped larger vehicle can be practical for ski equipment and mountain conditions. Families and private groups may prefer an Exclusive Van, while larger parties can be accommodated with an Exclusive Minibus according to the itinerary; the full range is described on the fleet page.

The service can also be coordinated for corporate retreats, incentive travel and high-profile groups requiring several vehicles — see Luxury Group Transport Italy. Where additional protection is required, security arrangements can be coordinated through authorised professionals; more information is available on VIP Security and Close Protection Italy.

Itinerary

Multi-Day Travel Through the Dolomites

A private chauffeur is particularly useful when the journey extends across several days. An itinerary may begin with an airport arrival in Venice, continue to Cortina, include scenic routes or ski areas, and finish with transportation towards another northern Italian destination. Where operationally possible, continuity with the same chauffeur can make the journey more consistent and easier to adapt if mountain weather changes or a pass becomes unavailable.
