A Zermatt private transfer is a pre-booked, door-to-door chauffeur journey from an airport — most often Milan Malpensa, about 190 km away — to Täsch, the last village reachable by conventional car, followed by the short shuttle-train connection into car-free Zermatt. Polidori Exclusive Services has operated private chauffeur transport since 1966, and the route from Milan over the Simplon Pass to the foot of the Matterhorn is one of its principal cross-border winter journeys.
This guide explains how arrival in Zermatt works, which airport to choose, the Simplon route, and how Zermatt combines with Breuil-Cervinia on the Italian side of the mountain. It is part of the wider Luxury Ski Resort Transfers guide covering resorts across Italy, Switzerland, France and Austria.
Definition
What Is a Zermatt Private Transfer?
A Zermatt private transfer is an exclusive journey in a private vehicle with a professional chauffeur, reserved for one traveller or group, from an airport, hotel or city to Täsch, with assistance moving luggage and ski equipment onto the shuttle train for the final stretch. Because Zermatt is closed to combustion-engine vehicles, every road transfer ends at Täsch; from there, the shuttle train covers the last few kilometres in about 12 minutes, and hotels in Zermatt typically collect guests at the station by electric vehicle.
Zermatt lies at about 1,600 metres in the canton of Valais, at the foot of the Matterhorn (4,478 m). Its ski area reaches the glacier at Klein Matterhorn, at 3,883 metres, and connects across the border with Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche in Italy.
Gateways
Which Airport to Fly Into
| Airport | Distance to Täsch | Approx. Drive Time | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Milan Malpensa (MXP) | ~190 km | ~3 hours | Long-haul and Gulf arrivals, combinations with Milan |
| Geneva (GVA) | ~230 km | ~3 hours | European flights, combinations with Verbier |
| Zurich (ZRH) | ~240 km | ~3–3.5 hours | Arrivals via Switzerland |
| Sion (SIR) | ~75 km | ~1 hour | Private aviation and limited seasonal flights |
Drive times assume normal winter conditions and can lengthen with snowfall, border queues or holiday-weekend traffic. For travellers arriving on long-haul flights from the Gulf, North America or Asia, Malpensa is usually the closest major intercontinental airport to Zermatt. General Malpensa arrival arrangements are described on the Private Airport Transfer Italy page.
Route
The Route over the Simplon Pass
From Malpensa the route follows the A26 motorway north to Domodossola, crosses into Switzerland and climbs the Simplon Pass at 2,006 metres before descending to Brig. The Simplon road is one of the few major Alpine passes routinely kept open throughout the year, with long avalanche galleries protecting its most exposed sections. From Brig the road continues through Visp and up the Mattertal valley to Täsch.
| Stage | Approx. Time from Malpensa | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Malpensa departure | — | Meet and greet in arrivals |
| Domodossola | ~1h15 | Last major Italian town |
| Simplon Pass (2,006 m) | ~1h45 | Swiss border crossed before the climb |
| Brig and Visp | ~2h15 | Rhône valley |
| Täsch terminal | ~3 hours | Luggage transferred to the shuttle train |
Arrival
How Arrival in Zermatt Works
- The vehicle arrives at the Täsch terminal, where luggage trolleys and covered platforms are available.
- The chauffeur assists with luggage and ski equipment to the shuttle train.
- The shuttle train reaches Zermatt in about 12 minutes, running frequently throughout the day.
- Most Zermatt hotels collect guests at the station with electric vehicles when notified of the arrival time.
For the return journey the process runs in reverse: the shuttle train brings guests to Täsch, where the vehicle is waiting for the drive back to the airport.
Planning
What to Prepare Before You Book

- Number of passengers, suitcases and ski or snowboard bags.
- Passports or identity documents for the border crossing.
- Whether the trip includes Breuil-Cervinia, Verbier, Milan or Lake Como before or after Zermatt.

Who This Service Is For
Gulf and UAE Families
Zermatt's car-free village and Matterhorn views make it a favoured winter destination for families from the Gulf, who generally arrive through Milan Malpensa with several generations and a large volume of luggage. The vehicle sizing and discretion described on the VIP Chauffeur Italy for UAE and Gulf Travellers page apply in full, and the handover at Täsch is planned so that luggage handling does not delay the family.
Skiers Combining Two Countries
The Zermatt and Cervinia ski areas are linked across the Plateau Rosa glacier, with a joint ski pass available since 1995 and a cable car link between Testa Grigia and Klein Matterhorn opened in 2023. Many skiers stay on one side and spend days on the other, or split the week between both resorts with a road transfer between them.
Groups and Corporate Ski Weeks
Groups arriving together are moved in coordinated vehicles, with a dedicated equipment vehicle where needed, following the approach on the Luxury Group Transport Italy page. Principals requiring additional protection can add the arrangements on the VIP Security and Close Protection Italy page.
Border
Border and Winter Driving Practicalities
The route crosses from Italy into Switzerland on the Simplon road. Switzerland is in the Schengen area but outside the EU customs union, so customs checks are possible and every passenger should carry a valid passport or identity document. Vehicles used on Swiss routes carry the Swiss motorway vignette.
In Italy, winter tyres or snow chains on board are required on designated roads, generally from 15 November to 15 April. In Switzerland, vehicles must be equipped for the conditions they will meet, and chains are mandatory where signed. Transfers are planned with the winter equipment required in both countries, and road and pass conditions are checked before departure.
Connections
Combining Zermatt with the Rest of the Trip
| Combination | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Zermatt and Breuil-Cervinia | Ski across the border on the linked area, or transfer by road between the two resorts |
| Zermatt and Milan | A city stay before or after the ski week, about three hours from Täsch |
| Zermatt and Lake Como | Lakeside days before the mountains, arranged through the Milan & Lake Como service |
| Zermatt and St. Moritz | Two Swiss resorts in one trip; see the Milan Malpensa to St. Moritz transfer |
| Zermatt and Courmayeur | Both sides of the Western Alps; see the Courmayeur transfer |
Practicalities
Vehicles, Ski Equipment and Timing
An executive sedan suits a couple with suitcases only; an SUV or van is generally preferred once ski bags are added; and a luxury minibus or a second vehicle is arranged for larger families and groups. The vehicle categories are described on the fleet page.
Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays are the busiest periods in Zermatt, and transfers for these dates are best reserved several weeks in advance. Return journeys to Malpensa are planned with an extra margin for the shuttle-train connection and for overnight snowfall on the Simplon Pass.
