A Livigno private transfer is a pre-booked, door-to-door chauffeur journey from an airport — most often Milan Bergamo, about 180 km away — to a hotel or chalet in Livigno, the high-altitude resort in the Alta Valtellina close to the Swiss border; neighbouring Bormio is reached by the same routes. Polidori Exclusive Services has operated private chauffeur transport since 1966, and both resorts — venues of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics — are part of its winter programme.

This guide covers the gateway airports, the choice of access route, the two resorts and the most common combinations. It is part of the wider Luxury Ski Resort Transfers guide covering resorts across Italy, Switzerland, France and Austria.

Definition

What Is a Livigno or Bormio Private Transfer?

It is an exclusive journey in a private vehicle with a professional chauffeur, reserved for one traveller or group, from an airport, railway station or city hotel directly to the accommodation in Livigno or Bormio. Because both resorts sit at the end of long mountain approaches, the main value of a private transfer is route planning: choosing the right access road for the day's conditions, timing the journey around pass and tunnel opening hours, and keeping luggage and ski equipment in one vehicle from the airport to the door.

Livigno lies at about 1,816 metres in the province of Sondrio and is known for its long-standing duty-free status, which exempts many goods from Italian VAT; its ski area has about 115 km of slopes. Bormio, at 1,225 metres, is known for its historic thermal baths and for the Stelvio downhill, one of the most demanding courses on the World Cup circuit.

Which Airport to Fly Into

AirportDistance to LivignoApprox. Drive TimeBest For
Milan Bergamo (BGY)~180 km~3h30The most convenient airport for most European flights
Innsbruck (INN)~190 km~3h30Arrivals via Austria
Zurich (ZRH)~220 km~4 hoursArrivals via Switzerland, through the Munt la Schera tunnel
Milan Malpensa (MXP)~250 km~4 hoursLong-haul and Gulf arrivals

Bormio lies on the same Valtellina route, somewhat closer to the Milan airports. Drive times assume normal winter conditions and can lengthen considerably with snowfall or holiday-weekend traffic. Airport arrangements are described on the Bergamo airport and Private Airport Transfer Italy pages.

Routes

Choosing the Route: Foscagno Pass or Munt la Schera

From Italy, the standard route follows the Valtellina to Bormio and then climbs the Foscagno Pass, at 2,291 metres, into Livigno. Livigno can also be reached from Switzerland through the Munt la Schera road tunnel, which has set opening hours, while the Forcola di Livigno pass to Switzerland is open in summer only. Because pass conditions change quickly in winter, the route is confirmed before departure on the basis of current road information.

2026 Olympics

Livigno, Bormio and the Milano Cortina 2026 Games

At the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, Livigno hosted the freestyle skiing and snowboarding events, while Bormio hosted men's alpine skiing on the Stelvio and the debut of ski mountaineering as an Olympic sport. Bormio has also hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships twice, in 1985 and 2005.

Planning

What to Prepare Before You Book

  • Flight number and arrival time.
  • The exact accommodation address in Livigno or Bormio.
  • Number of passengers, suitcases and ski or snowboard bags.
  • Passports or identity documents if the route may pass through Switzerland.
  • Any plans to combine both resorts, or to add Milan, Lake Como or St. Moritz.

Audience

Who This Service Is For

Skiers and Snowboarders

Livigno's snowparks and freestyle tradition and Bormio's steep World Cup terrain attract skiers who travel with their own equipment; a private transfer keeps it in the vehicle from the airport to the hotel.

Families and Gulf Travellers

Families travelling with several generations and substantial luggage benefit from the vehicle sizing and discretion described on the VIP Chauffeur Italy for UAE and Gulf Travellers page, and larger groups can be moved in coordinated vehicles following the Luxury Group Transport Italy approach.

Regulations

Winter Roads to Livigno and Bormio

In Italy, winter tyres or snow chains on board are required on roads designated by signage during the winter period, which generally runs from 15 November to 15 April, and the passes leading to Livigno regularly require full winter equipment. If the route passes through Switzerland, vehicles must be equipped for the conditions they will meet and chains are mandatory where signed. Every transfer is planned with the required equipment, and pass and tunnel conditions are checked before departure.

Practicalities

Vehicles, Ski Equipment and Timing

An executive sedan suits a couple with suitcases only; an SUV or van is usually needed once ski or snowboard bags are added; and a luxury minibus or a second vehicle is arranged for larger families and groups. The vehicle categories are described on the fleet page.

Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays are the busiest periods, and transfers for these dates are best booked several weeks in advance. Early departures for return flights are planned with an extra margin in case of overnight snowfall.
